AMD Smooth Talkers Meeting Recap:
Theme: Randomness!
Toastmaster: Mayura Ravi kicked off the meeting with a bit of insight into the concept of randomness, games of chance, and the mathematical theory of probability.
Humorist:
Carla Bischoff joked eloquently about people who start things but don't finish them.
Table Topics Master: Victoria Bruce invited members to take their chances with a stack of Table Topics Question cards or Finish-the-phrase cards. The topics chosen were certainly random, ranging from "The worst punishment for me is..." to "If you could create a holiday, what would it be?"
Table Topics Winner:
Carla Bischoff swept away the honor by sharing what she likes to do when she lets her hair down, without actually letting her hair down. She described vividly her hobby as a motorcyclist.
General Evaluator: June Kontvis reminded the Toastmaster to call upon the Humorist at the very start of the meeting to set the mood, rather than later.
Timer:
Carla Bischoff kept us aware of the clock.
Grammarian: Andrew Evans gave us Fortuitous as the word of the day to tap effectively into the meeting's theme: Adjective meaning, “happening or produced by chance.” He also gave an exceptionally detailed report on our use of conjunctions to start sentences and speaking too casually.
Ah Counter: Praveen Dongara reported our various uhms, ahs, pregnant pauses and repeated phrases.
Having fun with this new membership. In honor of Art, I will be presenting my first speech this week based on my 9th grade graduation speech and in honor of Art's life:
“Where do I go from here” is quite a simple phrase, but when asked in a question can be answered in many ways...
I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.
